Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride?

Posted on August 12, 2008 09:32 by David

It’s that time of the year again. The American Society of Furniture Designers has just announced the finalists for their prestigious 2008 Pinnacle Design Award. For the fourth time, David Francis Furniture has been selected as a finalist, this year in the Leather Upholstery category for my Bordeaux Leather Lounge Chair. Our stiff competition includes Century Furniture and Elite Leather, two massive manufacturers.

2008 marked the first year that we introduced a line of leather designs. Staying true to who we are, we combined leather with wood, twill and rattan. It took much effort to refine each piece so that they all flowed together into a well-edited offering that I can be proud of.

The result of blending the upholstered, double-stitched twill exterior, polished wood and leather interior created a unique design combination we’d never seen done before. As you can tell, I am very proud of this design from an artistic approach. And the Bordeaux Lounge Chair is the star of this collection.

As any great, self-absorbed designer, I am positive that my Bordeaux Leather Lounge Chair is, by far, the best design in the Leather Upholstery category. But, if history repeats itself, I will be putting the champagne back in the fridge for the forth time. Susan Lucci was nominated over 20 times before she won her first Daytime Emmy. If necessary, I’m prepared to wait a few more years for my Pinnacle Award!

We’re Going Back to the Future

Posted on July 25, 2008 06:29 by David

As an avid follower of David Francis, you have probably noticed that in recent years we have diversified our line by introducing a lot of wood designs to complement our rattan pieces.  Our wood furniture has run the gauntlet from very traditional to transitional to contemporary.  However, with the current cost of fine hardwoods skyrocketing, it has become necessary to seek out alternative materials for designs. Ironically this has brought our attention back to rattan.

Since the early 1950’s when rattan was brought indoors and made fashionable, the basic forms, materials and patterns have remained the same or similar.  Most people would classify rattan furniture as being casual in nature. It has been designed this way on purpose - it fulfills a specific lifestyle. However, we are set to do something new – we are taking rattan designs from casual to luxurious.

Besides being “eco-friendly,” rattan is extremely strong and durable.  It also holds finishes better than wood. Because it is so pliable, it has a lot of the properties you look for in construction. However, at this time, the most important thing rattan has going for it is its cost. Certain wood designs have become so expensive to produce that it has reduced the number of prospective buyers to a point they are no longer economically feasible. Therefore, we must make necessary adjustments in our product offering.

David Francis Furniture has already begun the transition from casual rattan to sophisticated and luxurious rattan designs. You will see the first of these in the 2009 catalog due out in early January. There will be more to come in 2010 and 2011. We are committed to offering you only the highest quality products for the luxury market regardless of the materials use. I am extremely excited to have this opportunity to “re-invent” rattan and to bring our new luxury rattan designs to market.  I hope you will be too.

Furniture is Fashion

Posted on July 8, 2008 03:53 by David

I have been saying for the past several years that the furniture industry has many parallels to the fashion industry.  Each new catalog has all of the pomp and circumstance of a fashion show.  It is our equivalent to a debut on the Paris runway. All my work that has been done over the past 12 to 18 months culminates with the unveiling of our new fashions for the upcoming year.  Within the first 90 days of its introduction, the designs will be deemed either “in” or “out.”  Plans are already being made to add and to change several of the existing fashions with new designs that are in the catalog that was just published.

Since our company is based exclusively on high quality, high-end luxury products, we have one objective when we introduce a new furniture fashion - it must be different.  The fashion industry is always moving forward.  You cannot exist in the past and expect to succeed.  Unless we can create a new “form” with a new twist using an old design, it has already been done.   There are so many “like” designs I see no reason to bring out just “another” chair or chest of drawers. It has to have a reason to exist!

I have already completed the fashion lineup for both 2009 and 2010.   As with any designer, fashion or furniture, I am impatient.  The designs for 2009 have not even been introduced and I cannot wait for the 2010 collections to become reality.  My finest designs are yet to come…I just wish they would get here a little faster!

Furniture Design as Art Form

Posted on June 13, 2008 04:47 by David

There is a lot of artistry that goes into designing furniture. I liken it to working with clay. You first mold it into a rough form…take a step back and edit. Then, work the form over and over until you are satisfied enough to make a prototype, or sample. Once you see the sample, you pick it apart…deconstruct…reconstruct…make final changes and refinement until you are happy to put your name on it.

Designing is extremely gratifying. You are able to watch your idea grow from lines on a page to an actual form, a reality you can touch and feel. To me, the success or failure of the public to respond to a particular design is not nearly as important as the creation and the process it took to complete. I like to feel proud that I pushed my own limits, that I was able to be objective and self-criticize until I felt my design was perfect.

The successful introduction of a new furniture design is one that gets the designer the attention and acceptance we all crave. A less than successful introduction…that’s something we refer to as a “limited edition”!

So…what’s so new about going green?

Posted on May 28, 2008 03:22 by David

Everywhere you look, the buzz is all about “going green” and many furniture manufacturers are just now coming out with their own environmental statement about using renewable materials. David Francis Furniture has been using renewable materials since 1979 when we started as a wicker furniture company.  Since then, we have moved on to the use of rattan, bamboo, woven grasses and wood from certified forests. So, we’ve been “green” for almost 30 years!

In fact, the only things we originally provided that were not totally “green” were our polyfoam cushions and some of our finishing materials.  But now, we are using cushions that are made of reusable “green” materials and we are constantly looking at “greener” finishing products and processes.

As science begins to catch up with the demand for totally “green” products, I can assure you David Francis will remain in the forefront by providing you with the highest quality, renewable products on the market.

Going “green” is not a new trend for David Francis Furniture, but it's the way we have been conducting our business since it began in 1979!

A Feel for Hospitality

Posted on May 22, 2008 06:38 by David

I just got back from our first showing at HD Expo in Las Vegas, a huge expo and conference with thousands of hospitality buyers. Since I had no idea what to expect, we decided to go small with a 10’ X 10’ booth in the “new exhibitor” section of the first floor.

We were among every product imaginable in regards to the hospitality design trade – linens, bath products, lighting, accessories, technology, artwork and furniture!

After seeing our competitors’ products, quality and design, I felt more than ever that we have a tremendous opportunity to fill a specific need. Whereas our prices may not be as low as some, our quality, finishing and upholstery is unmatched. I also believe that our quantity pricing is extremely competitive and will stand up to a side-by-side comparison with any other high-end manufacturer.

The recognition and positive feedback we received during our maiden voyage at HD Expo has energized us more than ever to be the very best at what we do.

So, I return from HD Expo feeling good about our commitment to bringing the hospitality design community the finest products, the highest quality designs and the best service.

We look forward to exhibiting again at the 2009 HD Expo, with a bigger and better booth and more visibility.

Versatile Style that Makes a Statement

Posted on April 3, 2008 07:30 by David
I believe that furniture is fashion for the home and we all strive to make our own furniture-fashion statement. Our furniture is a very visual extension of who we are and who we want to be perceived to be. To make a successful fashion statement, we need all components in a living space to flow together harmoniously – the ceilings, floors, walls and everything in between. This is achieved through deliberate fashion choices.

Over the years, I have developed a core set of products that define who David Francis Furniture is. From this core, I draw inspiration for all of the forms that we develop into new designs. My concept of design is based on a design wheel that defines each piece I create. Each different style of furniture branches off from this central core like spokes on a wheel. From this core, I have developed three distinct styles of furniture:
  • Transitional
  • Traditional
  • Contemporary
I design our pieces to work together, regardless of style. There is a conscious effort to allow you, the designer, to select pieces from each style that will complement and blend with any room setting, without looking out of place. You can feel confident when combining one of our transitional pieces with a traditional piece…or transitional with contemporary styling. Because each piece is derived from a common core, these combinations will never look forced.
In all three styles, I utilize the same materials. This also makes my pieces easily blend together. Whereas David Francis was once known only for rattan and canes, I have added exotic materials such as crushed bamboo, abaca, lampacanay and coco shell into the mix. I have further blended in woods and veneers with the central exotic materials, thus creating a more formal look.
I am always looking to design the highest-quality products that utilize the best materials and I am happy with the niche we fill. The designs we offer represent who we are and how we want our legacy to be remembered from generation to generation.
Make a statement,
David Francis

2007 Recap

Posted on April 2, 2008 05:25 by David
As 2007 comes to a close, we, at David Francis, wanted to reflect on the past year’s accomplishments and highlight some things to look forward to in 2008.
At a time when overall furniture orders have continued to decline and many manufacturers have suffered layoffs and bankruptcies, we are happy to report that David Francis is strong. We are strengthening our current client base and achieving more name recognition among high-end interior designers and we feel that 2008 will result in continued growth.
New Introductions
It’s all about the furniture! Each year, our design direction continues to evolve and we get more and more excited about the new items we are introducing. 2008 is definitely no exception! For the first time ever, David Francis is offering a full line of leather lounge seating as well as several chairs with interior upholstery. I am sure you will agree that these new offerings are something out of the ordinary and allow the end user to make a statement.
If you haven’t already, visit the “New Products” section at www.DavidFrancisFurniture.com
David Francis Contract
Our biggest news in 2007 was the launch of David Francis’ contract Division. Under the direction of Catherine Swett, this division is busy soliciting commercial projects and responding to RFPs for furnishings in resorts, hotels, restaurants, private clubs, etc. In 2008, we will be exhibiting at HD Expo in Las Vegas (May) and HD Boutique in Miami (September). While expanding into the contract realm, we are staying true to our commitment to quality and exclusive design. This means we are not dummying down our products for use in commercial applications. Instead, we are bringing luxury to the contract world.
Las Vegas Market
In January and July 2007, we showed at Las Vegas Market in our permanent showroom in the newly-opened Building B. We had steady traffic through our showroom, talked to qualified leads and introduced our line to new customers. We look forward to two more successful markets in 2008.
Pinnacle Award
Our Manhattan Lounge Chair was nominated for a Pinnacle Design Award in 2007. We traveled to High Point in October to attend the awards dinner, but alas, did not win. Of course, it was an honor to be recognized. Because the Manhattan Lounge Chair has gotten such fantastic response, we have introduced a Manhattan Barstool for 2008!
Publicity
2007 was a great year for publicity. Highlights included products placed in Veranda, House Beautiful and Architectural Digest. In January 2008, our Heirloom Dining Table will be featured in an episode of Divine Design with Candice Olsen!
2008 Catalog & Website
In January, look for our 2008 catalog with a fresher, new format. Note that our catalog will now run on a January-to-January cycle. We will also be launching a redesigned and more user-friendly website in March 2008.
Lastly, I would like to extend a thank you to thank our clients, showrooms and rep that have contributed to our continued success. We truly consider all of you part of the David Francis family. Have a wonderful holiday…and let’s make 2008 our best year yet!
Regards,
David

Product Design Evolution

Posted on April 2, 2008 05:23 by David
The David Francis line is sometimes described as accent furniture. That term refers to the fact that we sell pieces of furniture instead of entire rooms. Although we like the accent furniture designation, our main goal is so much more - we want our designs to be selected as the statement piece that a room is designed around.
I create our designs from an initial form, or overall shape. And, so many variations can be made from the same form. For example, the same form can take on different personalities by the designer using upholstery vs. wood vs. metal vs. any combination of materials. The same form can take on a traditional, transitional or contemporary vibe. David Francis Furniture has built a reputation for pushing the limits of design on a form by mixing unexpected, high-quality materials. Our interpretation of a form is like no other manufacturer.
I feel it is imperative that our designs be generational and timeless, so I have always shied away from short-lived trends and fads. Instead, I have concentrated my efforts on creating a broad range of transitional designs that ride smoothly between traditional and contemporary styling.
I have been developing our designs for more than ten years and decided several years ago that if we are to introduce a new design, it has to have some unique quality or it is not worth doing. That is why we are constantly comparing our new design ideas to those of our competitors and against our past creations to make sure we are not doing something that has already been done. The result of this constant testing and editing is the refined and graceful David Francis “look.”
If you analyze the past three David Francis catalogs you can clearly see just how, and where, our line has evolved. Each catalog has become a stepping stone to our next incarnation of design. And like fashion houses, we are always designing into the future. In fact, when you received your new 2008 David Francis catalog in January, we had already completed the design development for 2009, and we are currently working on sketches for 2010.
My personal philosophy is simple: I never am completely satisfied, so I am continually in pursuit for flawless and innovative materials and design. So, our customers can look forward to constant improvement and surprises from David Francis Furniture.
